It's a perfect evocation of innocence, joy, young love, hope. Thanks to Netflix, it's the type of film that now has a platform to reach a much larger audience than it would've just a few years ago, and deservingly so. Too bad the film seems resolutely uninterested in developing any of its supporting characters. Good advice in that particular context, but stretched out over a long and tumultuous life, the same advice traps Pin-Jui (Tzi Ma), and traps those he loves. As the details mount in the flashbacks, the rhythms of present-day Pin-Jui's life are illuminated as having a specific source. What distinguishes “Tigertail” is the way Yang explores Pin-Jui’s earlier life as a means of showing how duty and obligation brought him to that place. (This is one of the film's many insightful points). You may occasionally receive promotional content from the Los Angeles Times. But when Pin-Jui's boss says he will finance Pin-Jui's move to America, but only if Pin-Jui marries his daughter Zhenzhen (Kunjue Li), whom Pin-Jui barely knows, it's an offer the young man just cannot refuse. It’s a mystery that Yang reveals methodically, purposefully, building toward a moving resolution that could prompt a few parents to share life stories with their adult children.
